There Was Once a Traveller… unfolds as an intricate cartography of memory, migration, and correspondence, where the materiality of textile becomes a repository of lived experience and historical residue. Anchored in letters exchanged between my mother and international pen pals during the 1970s and 1980s, this body of work transforms epistolary communication into tactile landscapes—maps of intimacy, longing, and the enduring traces we leave behind..

Josef's Dream

Following The Traveler’s Map, Josef’s Dream continues to explore the ways in which memory, movement, and connection intertwine. In this series, I investigate the connection between my mother and one of her most cherished pen pals, Josef Span, whose letters and dreams of travel form the emotional backbone of this project. This exchange, which began in 1978, spans not only geographical borders but also emotional realms, as Josef's dreams of travel, and the connection they shared, have continued to resonate in my mother's memories.

The Traveler's Map

Inspired by my mother’s letters to her penpals when she was a young girl in the 70s and 80s, as well as her yearning for connection with individuals from far and near, The Traveler’s Map is a blueprint of this journey and adventure through life that she has embarked on with these different encounters. The Map is representative of the traces that we leave as we create shared experiences and memories, thus creating a unique imaginative space and time wherein only we exist, and subsequently a utopic map of our lives
