The Archive is Only The First Sentence...
On 5th June 2026, G.A.S. Lagos hosted The Archive is Only the First Sentence, an open studio and presentation of residency research by Yoma Emore. The session introduced the narrative and archival frameworks shaping her practice, alongside her ongoing project The Prince Who Never Was, which examines lineage and the early sixteenth-century Lusophone–Warri encounters in Nigeria.
Announcing the Recipients of the G.A.S. Fellowship Award 2026 for Emerging Nigerian Artists and Mid-Career Art Writers
In December 2025, G.A.S. Foundation, and Yinka Shonibare Foundation, launched the fourth edition of the G.A.S. Fellowship Award, supported in partnership with Deutsche Bank. This year’s call, the largest to date, included multiple categories for fully funded residencies at G.A.S. Lagos.

There Was Once a Traveller… by multidisciplinary artist Yoma Emore unfolds as an intricate cartography of memory, migration, and correspondence, where the materiality of textile becomes a repository of lived experience and historical residue. Anchored in letters exchanged between her mother and international pen pals during the 1970s and 1980s, this body of work transforms epistolary communication into tactile landscapes—maps of intimacy, longing, and the enduring traces we leave behind.
The 10 Best Booths at Art Basel Miami Beach 2024
The only shared booth at the fair unites two powerhouse African galleries: Kampala’s Afriart and the Lagos-founded Rele, both of which are making their debuts in the fair’s main Galleries section. The two galleries present standout works by three artists apiece, reflecting the missions of their respective programs. Next door, Rele highlights three women artists: Péju Alatise, Sedireng Olehile Mothibatsela, and Yoma Emore.

For Art Basel Miami Beach 2024, Rele is delighted to be presenting 3 African female artists -Sedireng Mothibatsela, Peju Alatise, and Yoma Emore who source and incorporate materials from their respective communities and immediate environments. Moving beyond traditional Western materials such as canvas and paper, the artists convey important messages about their communities - girl/women's empowerment, preservation, tradition, and sustainability.
